After 4 years of constant campaigning to reduce the number of scrap metal lorries travelling to Williams yard through Bearton ward, Cllr Lisa Courts like other local residents was left shocked when the public inquiry decided in June that it would not impose any restrictions on the movement of lorries supplying the yard. The news was a major blow to everyone's efforts.

With a swing from Conservatives to Liberal Democrats of 26%, local candidate Rosemarie Hollinghurst won decisively with nearly 600 votes and a majority of 288. With a larger than usual turnout of nearly 50%, Conservative support collapsed as 65% of voters chose Liberal Democrat.

A year ago South West Herts resident and Liberal Democrat MEP Sharon Bowles was appointed Chair of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, Europe's top committee responsible for the regulation of financial services. At the time Sharon was tipped by the Financial Times to become one of the most powerful people in European finance. Since then her reputation for fairness and impartiality and her outstanding ability to master and analyse complex briefs has propelled her to the centre of international affairs.

The decision, announced on 6.8.2010, by Michael Gove, Education Secretary, to allow the capital spending projects for rebuilding three Stevenage schools to go ahead, has been warmly welcomed by the local borough and county councillor for the area involved, Liberal Democrat Robin Parker.

Police Officers from the Stevenage Safer Neighbourhood Team are staging a 4-5 mile ride taking you along the cycle paths of Stevenage through Fairlands Valley Park and Monks Wood before finishing back at the Town Gardens.
