Today government has released the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) which sets out the development plans for the next 13 years in the region.

St Albans Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate Sandy Walkington has condemned the Government decision to ignore local representations and blow apart the Green Belt around St Albans, announced today in the final version of the Government's 'East of England Regional Spatial Strategy'.

The Lib Dems picked up two seats from Labour in last week's election, both in Peartree Ward. They put this down not just to the weakness of Gordon Brown's Labour party, but also to their consistent demands that a pool be included in the Broadwater Road development.

Fri 2nd May 2008:

Liberal Democrats were celebrating taking 2 of the 3 seats in Peartree, the first time ever that Labour has not been the winning party there. Malcolm Cowan, (already a county councillor) and Louise Lotz, defeated longstanding Labour councillor Jacqui Russell and newcomer Dean Milliken. Frank Marsh, the third LibDem candidate, who lost in 2006 by just 6 votes, was once again unlucky, finishing just 10 votes short of Labour's Steve Roberts.

Lib Dem councillors and activists were prominent at the consultation on the Broadwater Road West development at Woodhall Community Centre. They were unimpressed with what was on offer, and were not alone in their disappointment.

Hertfordshire is faced with around 83,000 new homes being built, if the government confirms the numbers in the draft East of England plan. This will place a massive strain on the county and homebuilders will in future have to pay a tariff for each new home, to meet some of the infrastructure costs.
